Grant Nicholls

Deputy Commissioner, Northern Territory

Grant is currently the Deputy Commissioner, Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services.  Grant was previoulsy with the New Zealand Police, with oversight of all twelve NZ Police Districts.  He has also acted as the Deputy Commissioner: Resource Management, National Operations and Deputy Commissioner: Operations.

Previously as Assistant Commissioner: Lower North and South, Grant had oversight of policing in the Eastern, Central, Wellington, Tasman, Canterbury and Southern Police Districts.

Grant joined Police in 1985 and has held operational, policy and administrative posts including District Commander of Eastern District, based in Napier.  Other positions have included City and Rural Area Commander and CIB posts around the lower North Island.  He held Assistant Commissioner posts covering Strategy, Policy and Performance and Specialist Operations and one of two territorial Assistant Commissioners before taking his current role, based at Police National Headquarters in April 2014.

Overseas experience includes deployment to Thailand as a Contingent Commander after the 2004 tsunami, for which he was awarded a Special Services Medal.  He was seconded to Strathclyde Police in Glasgow; served in Timor Leste and visited Police Services in Australia, the US and Canada; and underwent command training at the Police Staff College, Bramshill, near London.

Grant has been awarded Commendations and two Commissioner’s Silver Merit Awards.  He holds a Masters Degree in Public Policy and Administration; a Masters Degree in Management; a Graduate Diploma in Emergency Services Management; a Diploma in Business Studies; and an Advanced Certificate in Terrorism Studies.

He holds the honorary rank of Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Royal New Zealand Military Police.
